Best Practices Achieved
18. Promote Alternative Transportation
We promote sailing. Sailing lessons, careers in the sailing industry. We sell cotton tote bags and sun protection rash guards to promote and raise funds for sailing.
17. Offer Vegetarian or Vegan Alternatives
We had vegetable kebabs done on the grill and hummus for our vegetarian sailor.
12. Divert Food Waste from the Landfill
11. Ensure Proper Waste Bin Placement and Signage
8. Post Educational and Reusable Signage
We hand painted all the signs on discarded pieces of wood, as well as directly painting on an old barrel to collect any unavoidable single-use plastic bottles that a random visitor may have brought to the event
6. Publicize Your Sustainability Efforts
We share our efforts on our Instagram and Facebook pages. Our sailors, parents and other participants promote it on their social media too. A local television news channel, local radio station and the local newspapers covered the event taking special note of our environmental efforts.
3. Serve Food with Plastic-Free Dinnerware
Reusable bamboo plates and cups, as well as a few other reusable hard plastic plates and cups were used and enjoyed by all attending. We had the macaroni pie with our hands, as we didn't want to use single use plastic forks. Hoping to have stainless steel utensils for a future event.
2. Eliminate Plastic Straws
Preparing our own homemade sorrel, we avoided using juice boxes with plastic straws
1. Eliminate Single-Use Water Bottles and Provide Water Refill Stations
Water refill stations only. No single use plastic bottles provided. We filled reused gallon bottles at a mountain spring to fill the coolers. We purchased an additional large cooler to have multiple water stations.
