Best Practices Achieved

1. Eliminate Single-Use Water Bottles and Provide Water Refill Stations

1. In the lead up to the regatta, we asked participants to think carefully about how they rehydrate on the race course without using single use plastics. All our yachts have water-makers and drinking water filters. Through our in-app information and email communication (photo's attached), we advised them to follow our lead, refill their own water bottles and avoid using su plastics.

2. Eliminate Plastic Straws

All caterers worked with us and avoided the use of any plastic straws. One evening event had a cocktail to start with where caterers used paper straws.

3. Serve Food with Plastic-Free Dinnerware

All caterers at all our regatta events used crockery or glass and no single use plastic dinnerware.

4. Skip Bags or Go Reusable

Our regattas have not used throwaway bags for several years now. We give out useful sailor's hold-all bags at registration containing merchandise such as caps, flags, regatta clothing. The bags are made from recycled sails.

13. Use Paperless Event Management

We used no paper throughout the entire event. All participants and staff were using the event app where all regatta information was held - notice of race, Event program, even the race course announcements and daily briefings, weather forecast, evening plans, emergency contact numbers, info on Environment and Charity,

5. Award Practical Items or Use a Perpetual or Upcycled Trophy

3 Perpetual trophies were used this year and have been used for the last 20 years of Oyster regattas. Useful prizes were also given out - like Decanters and glasses, bottles of champagne, bags made from recycled sail materials

7. Involve Local Organizations

EAG - Environment Awareness Group and Antigua National Parks were two charities we were supporting during the regatta. We included a box on the regatta entry forms where participants can donate money to these charities. Through this method, we raised a total of 1500 UK pounds which goes directly to the charities.

8. Post Educational and Reusable Signage

All educational signage was posted electronically to help aid our ‘paperless’ approach this year. The Regatta Green Boating Goals and Clean Regatta information were shared on the Oyster app.

9. Serve Local Food or Source Seafood Sustainably

Antigua is a small island with not much farming or food production. We did not import any food ourselves and that way supported the local economy. We also used local restaurants, sponsors and caterers. Where possible, we used Antigua made products eg. local pineapples, fish, rum.

10. Organize a Green Team

Molly, Jade and Rachel were the core regatta team and doubled up as the green team. We unfortunately didn't manage to get a picture of the team together but they were involved with talking to caterers, charities and participants before and during the event helping to get the clean regatta message across to everyone.

11. Ensure Proper Waste Bin Placement and Signage

Advice on where to recycle was given on the Green Boating Goals list available on the Events App. The building where the regatta office was located had public signage regarding Recycling and location of bins. We included information on managing waste in a general briefing at the start of the regatta.

15. Prevent Toxins from Entering the Water

Advice on preventing toxins from entering the water was given on the Green Boating Goals list available on the Events App. We also introduced participants to the Green boating goals via email in the lead up to the regatta.

17. Offer Vegetarian or Vegan Alternatives

Vegetarian alternatives were offered at every event throughout the regatta

18. Promote Alternative Transportation

We did not use any coaches during the regatta to transport guests to evening venues. The yachts either sailed to the venues or they were in walking distance.

19. Reduce Day-of Emissions

The race committee sent updates and results through the oyster app, nothing was printed. We did not use any bow or mark stickers at the event.

6. Publicize Your Sustainability Efforts

Details of our commitment to delivering a clean regatta and some of the initiatives we followed are listed on the Antigua Regatta webpage on the Oyster Yachts website. This information will be updated once we receive the 2025 SFTS badge.

16. Increase Awareness of Wildlife and Habitat Protection

Antigua National Parks are supported by Oyster. We heavily support the national park Nelson’s Dockyard by holding our regatta inside this historic location. We also help to promote the Coral Restoration and Turtle Conservation projects on the island. Boaters are made aware that this site is a UNESCO heritage site and promotes its own diverse marine ecosystems, including coral reefs and seagrass beds.
