1. Eliminate Single-Use Water Bottles and Provide Water Refill Stations
We provided the organisation's staff with bottles of water
2. Eliminate Plastic Straws
We no longer use plastic straws
3. Serve Food with Plastic-Free Dinnerware
we serve food in biodegradable materials or plates and dishes that are washed with specific non-polluting detergents.
4. Skip Bags or Go Reusable
We gave the sailors the Club’s Slam sail bags as skipper bags, which they can reuse
5. Award Practical Items or Use a Perpetual or Upcycled Trophy
Yccs prizes are perpetual items
6. Publicize Your Sustainability Efforts
We have shown on our ledwall what YCCS is doing to reduce its environmental impact. All the YCCS initiative are also listed on YCCS website.
7. Involve Local Organizations
We have agreed with local institutions and organizations to promote the 4Rs of sustainability. During the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, these messages were displayed on our ledwall.
8. Post Educational and Reusable Signage
We have provided signs indicating how to separate waste, we have also specified that the materials used for post-race refreshments are all biodegradable.
9. Serve Local Food or Source Seafood Sustainably
The organisation provided meals with 0 km or in any case local ingredients.
10. Organize a Green Team
Two people were in charge of checking the checklist was respected
11. Ensure Proper Waste Bin Placement and Signage
All the trash bins had signs for waste separation
12. Divert Food Waste from the Landfill
In Italy, waste must be separated for recycling, as required by law.
13. Use Paperless Event Management
All the documents are provided in digital format as for example the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup entry form.
15. Prevent Toxins from Entering the Water
Point one of the Charta Smeralda, which was displayed on our ledwall all the days of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, focuses on the prevention of coastal and marine pollution. We also have specific rules on the Notice of Race on hull cleaning. Infact it states that “Only boats with a hard, non-polishing or non-ablating and non-biocidal urethane primer or topcoat on the underwater areas of the hull, when at their regatta berths and after permission by the Marina Office, may get their bottom cleaned by the Harbour Master’s divers”.
This ensures that cleaning is done safely and without releasing harmful substances into the water.
16. Increase Awareness of Wildlife and Habitat Protection
To increase awareness of wildlife and habitat protection, during the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup we have published, in the YCCS Magazine, an article about World Maritime Day 2025, which explains why the ocean is so important, why we must protect its biodiversity, and how we can promote sustainable use of the sea
17. Offer Vegetarian or Vegan Alternatives
Different food options were provided during the event including vegetarian alternatives.
18. Promote Alternative Transportation
Range Rover is the automotive partner of the YCCS and provides a courtesy car service to sailors and staff arriving in Porto Cervo for the event.
19. Reduce Day-of Emissions
During the event were used robotic buoys
20. Inspire Future Action
The Charta Smeralda is an ethical code that guides people and organizations toward actions that help to protect the environment. The YCCS is committed to follow its principles and sharing them with the public.
