Best Practices Achieved
1. Eliminate Single-Use Water Bottles and Provide Water Refill Stations
There were no single use plastic bottles at the event, and there were stations to refill the sailor's bottles. But single use plastic was used everywhere else in the region.
2. Eliminate Plastic Straws
plastic straws were not available
3. Serve Food with Plastic-Free Dinnerware
Food was served with reusable plates and cutlery
4. Skip Bags or Go Reusable
there were no bags, people used their own food bags or boxes to transport food
5. Award Practical Items or Use a Perpetual or Upcycled Trophy
We have one perpetual trophy at the end of the year and we award medals to each event winners
The ribbons of the medals are made from recycled plastic and the medals themselves are metal (I don't have more info). They are manufactured in Greece in bulk, we have been using them since 2023 and we have medals for the next 3 years. This is cost effective, it gives consistency in the look/brand and saves local organizer from producing items. Local organizers are discouraged from creating trophies and encouraged to award local products as presents but this was not the case at this event, where they made additional trophies with our sustainable awareness.
6. Publicize Your Sustainability Efforts
The sustainability efforts were in the forefront of all the communications coming out of the event.
@wingfoilracing and www.wingfoilracing.com
7. Involve Local Organizations
After the publicity on water pollution last year, we managed to get from the Izmir municipality this barge, which was stationed in the bay of Urla for two weeks and fishing trash out of the water.
8. Post Educational and Reusable Signage
Nothing significant was done on this
9. Serve Local Food or Source Seafood Sustainably
Food was very local, too local for some, and the available seafood was fresh out of the sea!
10. Organize a Green Team
There was a Green Team, tirelessly working to keep the beach clean. The plastic trash is still a huge problem in the bay and there is no quick fix.
11. Ensure Proper Waste Bin Placement and Signage
recycling is not available in the region, so there is no point in separating the trash.
12. Divert Food Waste from the Landfill
There was no food wasted. Whatever leftovers were taken home by the local staff.
13. Use Paperless Event Management
Event platform is only online: https://www.racingrulesofsailing.org/documents/10460/event?name=2025%2520Dogus%2520Marine%2520Services%2520Formula%2520Wing%2520Europeans
Communication is only online via the complementary information channel:

14. Host a Beach or Marina Cleanup
We organized one, between the two events. But the main effort was made by the staff that was keeping the beach spotless from the waste washed out by the sea.
15. Prevent Toxins from Entering the Water
Not sure what the question means. We didn't have anything entering the water...
16. Increase Awareness of Wildlife and Habitat Protection
We had sailors explaining to local kids that visited the competition, what is the tangible effect of trash floating in the water
17. Offer Vegetarian or Vegan Alternatives
Mediterranean diet is vegan/vegeterian friendly, there's no need to make special arrangements for that!
18. Promote Alternative Transportation
All local transport was on bikes or buses
19. Reduce Day-of Emissions
Not sure what the question means.
Anyway, the whole facility was exclusively powered by solar energy
20. Inspire Future Action
11 year old Derin saw the event last year, took up WingFoiling and this year he sailed at the event!
