Best Practices Achieved

1. Eliminate Single-Use Water Bottles and Provide Water Refill Stations

Our sailing club replaced our regular water fountain this summer with a refillable water station with a filter. When working with our community partner, Halifax Health Foundation to which we are directing donations, we requested sailing related give aways, including a reusable water bottle and chap sticks for sun protection. Each competitor and volunteer received the giveaways.

2. Eliminate Plastic Straws

We do not purchase or provide straws at our facility..

5. Award Practical Items or Use a Perpetual or Upcycled Trophy

The Windward Women cleaned out the loft in our sail room and discovered several non-usable sails. We coordinated with Dunsel’s Upcycled Sails Dunsel.us to create trophies for the regatta.

7. Involve Local Organizations

As mentioned above, we are in our second year of partnering with the Halifax Health Foundation to support their work with cancer patient support services. The foundation created a dedicated page for us to collect tax deductible donations, especially in memory of one of our women sailors who recently passed away from breast cancer. The foundation staff were very responsive to our requests and they participated in the event as well. We coordinated with local businesses who supported the regatta.

8. Post Educational and Reusable Signage

One sponsor graciously provided the opportunity for us to design and install reusable yard signs to mark the entrance of the club for the regatta and to honor our sponsors and partners. We will have these signs for future regattas.

10. Organize a Green Team

This year our club started a new collaboration with the Marine Discovery Center in New Smyrna Beach. We conduct weekly water quality testing for marine life. The data is given to the Marine Discover Center as well as the Marine Resource Center savetheirl.org The data is collected weekly by our green team. We plan to expand our green team next year and include the summer sailing camp youth. A future goal is to expand the STEM component of the youth program. Our club is located on the Halifax River where the Intercoastal Waterway runs. We continually have trash and debris wash up onto our shoreline, where wildlife lives. We conduct beach clean ups on our boat ramps on a regular basis. The data is submitted through the Ocean Conservancy app, Clean Swell and is counted in the Volusia County Volunteer work. Next year, we plan to organize a beach cleanup with the community.

11. Ensure Proper Waste Bin Placement and Signage

Our club has regular trash pickup from the City of Daytona Beach. However, we do not have a recycling pick up service. Instead, we have recycling bins and one of our club members empties and recycles the materials. We hope to work with the city to provide a recycling bin and regular pick-up service.

13. Use Paperless Event Management

We posted our sailing instructions online through Regatta Network and printed only one copy which was posted on the official board which you can see in the photo behind the Principal Race Official at the Skippers’ Meeting.

14. Host a Beach or Marina Cleanup

17. Offer Vegetarian or Vegan Alternatives

After the regatta and prize giving, we offered a taco buffet line, which is very popular. We offered vegan fillings and toppings. We labeled and announced the fillings and toppings as well.

19. Reduce Day-of Emissions

We used digital communications as much as possible for the regatta-through social media. We used solar panels to generate power to run the crock pots!

18. Promote Alternative Transportation

We rented a golf cart to transport volunteers and competitors from the parking areas to the Halifax Sailing Club. This was for environmental and safety reasons.
