Best Practices Achieved

1. Eliminate Single-Use Water Bottles and Provide Water Refill Stations

This year we partnered with Eco Sky Water—a sustainable bottled water company based in Barbados, focusing on providing clean, safe, and toxic-free water without harming the environment. They utilize solar energy to extract water from the atmosphere, ensuring no ground runoff or contamination occurs. Their products are packaged in 100% non-GMO, plant-based, backyard compostable bottles and glass bottles, promoting a circular distribution system that minimizes waste.

2. Eliminate Plastic Straws

Barbados has a ban on single use plastic straws since April 2020!!

3. Serve Food with Plastic-Free Dinnerware

Barbados has a ban on petroleum based single use dishware and dinnerware.

4. Skip Bags or Go Reusable

There is a ban on single use petroleum based plastic bags since april 2020

5. Award Practical Items or Use a Perpetual or Upcycled Trophy

Trophies were locally crafted from downed mahogany trees.

6. Publicize Your Sustainability Efforts

Several great posts went out about our sustainability efforts with links to sailorsforthesea

7. Involve Local Organizations

From local artisans that crafted recycling signs and trophies, to local vendors, local seafood, local musicians, and local sponsors and volunteers the entire event could not happen without community.

13. Use Paperless Event Management

17. Offer Vegetarian or Vegan Alternatives

Vegan and vegetarian options available - veggie burgers, veggie samosas, salads, fish, etc.

11. Ensure Proper Waste Bin Placement and Signage

Recycling of bottles very central and visible and clearly marked with permanent colorful signs. These were located near water stations

10. Organize a Green Team

I headed the green team with the assistance of many volunteers and spearheaded by Jean Hill who helped bring all the various aspects of the event together.

9. Serve Local Food or Source Seafood Sustainably

Food is locally sourced. Fish is sustainably harvested - fish selection is most sustainble types of local fish like flying fish.

8. Post Educational and Reusable Signage

Reusable signs throughout point towards the glass and plastic bottle recycling area. Reusable signs for water stations throughout. Signs reminding visitors to keep the beaches clean created by a local artist.
