Best Practices Achieved
7. Involve Local Organizations
1. We don't provide any plastic water bottles and competitors were informed of this before the event so they bring their own bottle. We have a water filling sink outside the changing area,
2. We haven't provided plastic straws for a long time.
3. Our post race teas are served on china plates and in china mugs with metal knives and spoons.
4. All items brought to the venue are brought in reusable bags.
5. The prizes were returnable trophies that have winners names inscribed on and reused every year.
6. We publicised our sustainability efforts on our website. We have dedicated Environmental items in our newsletter every month.
7. All our signage is reusable or only online. We also have some Environmental roll out posters that we share and rotate with other clubs.
11. We have clearly signed bins well placed inside and outside the club.
12. All food waste is taken home by the team serving the food and put in their compost. We don't generate a lot of waste food with only about 50 sets of sandwiches and cakes.
13. Event management is paperless and all covered on the website and online sign up forms and any last minute details are written on a whiteboard with dry-erase marker pens.
15. We sent information about which are the toxic and less toxic suncreams to competitors and on our website. All boats are washed down in a dedicated area with water only.
16. We have signs about impact on wildlife, we put the information in our communications and we have run talks about our local wildlife at the club over the previous winter.
17. We offer vegetarian and meat options in our sandwiches.
18. We encourage cycling where possible by providing secure bike area and we have informed visitors that there is a bus stop opposite the club. Most visitors sail to the event from further up the harbour.
