14. Host a Beach or Marina Cleanup
A beach and waterfront cleanup was conducted on the areas surrounding the Geelong yacht club. The team of 15 volunteers came along under the sunrise and in not much time at all had collected 4 shopping bags full of litter which included synthetic clothing, many cigarette butts and lots of disintegrating polystyrene. The ORCV also shouted a coffee for all the participants, encouraging keep cups of course!
16. Increase Awareness of Wildlife and Habitat Protection
Our Species Showcase featured the Burrunan Dolphin, a species only formally recognised in the last decade with only two known resident populations. One of these populations resides in the Port Philip Bay region where ORCV races are conducted. Given the small number of individuals documented the species in classed as endangered and is the focus of ongoing research and conservation work. ORCV boats are often greeted by inquisitive bow riding Burrunans, but now knowing they truly are rare and unique makes these interactions all the more special.
