Best Practices Achieved
1. Eliminate Single-Use Water Bottles and Provide Water Refill Stations
Elimination of Single-Use Items:
• We provide reuseable containers to the Race Committee.
2. Eliminate Plastic Straws
• To supplement these, we also supply recyclable paper water bottles to all staff and the bar service.
• On the bar, we have removed any straws.
• Staff gear is now given out in reusable cloth bags
5. Award Practical Items or Use a Perpetual or Upcycled Trophy
• Our awards are chosen based on them being useful and sustainable items (e.g. ice buckets, charcuterie boards, trays, tankards and wine).
7. Involve Local Organizations
Community Involvement:
• Every year we work closely with the local residents to produce this event. We primarily use only local supplies for the event space. We store and reuse as much as possible.
• We support local vendors and shops, purchasing banners, paper goods, bags and provisions.
• Evening music and entertainers are all regional talent. This supports both the local economy and reduces travel costs.
• Volunteers from the Saint Barth Yacht Club are involved in both planning and on-site activities. They are primarily a youth sailing education center. The Bucket provides both financial donations and robotic marks (see Green Boating at end).
10. Organize a Green Team
• Our incoming teams and local setup teams work together to be our Green Team. They are responsible for recycling bins and trash bins. These are positioned around the event space and regularly managed.
• Paperless event notifications are in play. We deliver most of the documents by email and direct people to the website posting. In addition, we are receiving our signed documents via electronic documents. We remain committed to reducing paperwork!
16. Increase Awareness of Wildlife and Habitat Protection
• Wildlife and habitat protection is very important to us and St Barths. The Bucket has long been involved in ensuring our event does no harm to the marine life and reefs. Warnings and information are posted as part of our Sailing Instructions.
• Government and Marine Sanctuary posters are prominent on our information / Official Notice Board. Participants are required to notify the race committee of any whale sightings. This allows us to notify the rest of the participants and comply with government directives.
20. Encourage Green Boating Practices
• Preventing toxins entering the water is a requirement of the local government. The marina distributes information on containment of hazardous materials. Our participants work directly with the marina team to get the most up-to-date information.
• Green boating is an underlying message with our regatta. St Barths has limited resources. For the Bucket to be welcomed back, all participants need to limit their negative impact on the island.
18. Use Eco-Smart Management Techniques
• This year, the Bucket donated a second robotic mark to the St Barths Yacht Club (sailing club). They were deployed during the event and will used by the SBYC and most all regattas in St Barths. Robotic marks are increasingly prevalent in sailboat racing and represent a strong commitment to the environment. They reduce the need for mark boats, decreasing engine pollution and environmental damage to the sea floor by anchors.
