Best Practices Achieved
10. Organize a Green Team
1. Eliminate single-use water bottles and provide water refill stations
No single use plastic water bottles or straws were used by competitors or coaches. All were encouraged to bring water bottles and use the water refill stations provided around the club.
2. Eliminate plastic straws
Plastic straws were not used for drinks during this event
3. Serve food with plastic free dinnerware
Food was served on paper/compostable plates and biodegradable silverware
4. Skip bags or go reusable
Lunch bags were biodegradable 'plastic' for on the water lunches for sailors and coaches
5. Award practical items/perpetual awards
Perpetual awards and wooden oars were used for awards for sailors
6. Publicize your sustainability efforts
Posters were hung around the club advertising the efforts being made to be environmentally aware when running a regatta and to encourage all participants and spectators to use the compost bins and water refill stations provided
7. Involve local organisations
Sailors were given caps provided by a local organisation, food was provided by local shops
8. Post educational and reusable signage
Posters were displayed around the club to educate people about Sailors for the Sea's efforts (and NBYC too) to run clean regattas
9. Serve local food
Food was provided by a local pizza company, the club restaurant and local bagel shops
10. Organise a green team
The Green Team included young sailors when doing beach cleanups, the regatta committee who were instrumental in ensuring the regatta ran in accordance with the selected practices and a number of other volunteers, both in the lead up to the regatta and during the event itself
11.Ensure proper waste bin placement and signage
Both regular waste and compost bins were placed around areas serving food, under the tent and in general thoroughfares. Signage was placed on the bins to educate the crowds regarding composting or waste management
13. Use paperless event management
All event details and meeting notes/logistical items were shared online
14. Host a beach cleanup
The Junior Sailing program organised 4 beach cleanups leading up to and after the regatta
17. Offer vegetarian options
Vegetarian options were offered for beakfast, lunch and pizzas
