Best Practices Achieved
1. Eliminate Single-Use Water Bottles and Provide Water Refill Stations
We were awarded a grant to install this water station.
2. Eliminate Plastic Straws
There are no plastic straws at NBYC.
3. Serve Food with Plastic-Free Dinnerware
Our breakfast and post-regatta food was "grab and go". No utensils were provided.
5. Award Practical Items or Use a Perpetual or Upcycled Trophy
Winners received hand embroidered towels as "trophies".
8. Post Educational and Reusable Signage
See picture.
12. Divert Food Waste from the Landfill
Sailing coach uses compost in her home garden.
Breakfast and dinner for 120 sailors & coaches generated less than 3/4 of a barrel of landfill garbage.
13. Use Paperless Event Management
Registration was paperless. Our junior sailors made all signs of the regatta.
10. Organize a Green Team
We have a wonderful Green Team responsible for coordinating the regatta. this included planning the food & and ensuring that green practices were implemented. (wish I had a picture)
16. Increase Awareness of Wildlife and Habitat Protection
Mystic Aquarium provided a program titled "Explore the Shore" to junior sailors prior to the regatta. The importance of protecting local marine life was emphasized.
14. Host a Beach or Marina Cleanup
Beach cleanups were performed before and after the regatta.
17. Offer Vegetarian or Vegan Alternatives
Veggie burgers were offered as an alternative to hamburgers and hot dogs.
4. Skip Bags or Go Reusable
NBYC galley provided paper-wrapped sandwiches in reusable waterproof containers.
6. Publicize Your Sustainability Efforts
NBSA newsletter is distributed to members and the greater community and highlights Green Team efforts. Clean practices of the Larry White Regatta will be presented in the next publication and our annual yearbook. Clean efforts are also communicated through social media.
19. Prevent Toxins from Entering the Water
Only water is used to clean boats after regattas.
