Best Practices Achieved
1. Eliminate Single-Use Water Bottles and Provide Water Refill Stations
Nyack Boat Club has a water bottle filling station that all sailors were encouraged to use.
2. Eliminate Plastic Straws
No plastic straws were used at this event. Wooden stir sticks were provided for stirring coffee and other beverages.
3. Serve Food with Plastic-Free Dinnerware
Our Nyack Thistle Fleet has a full set of metal utensils that we bring to regattas for all to use. We save water by bringing these utensils home and washing in a dishwasher instead of by hand. All sailors were encouraged to bring their own reusable cups for beverages.
5. Award Practical Items or Use a Perpetual or Upcycled Trophy
The awards were practical glassware.
9. Serve Local Food or Source Seafood Sustainably
Breakfast included locally made bagels from Nyack Hot Bagel.
10. Organize a Green Team
We had a green team made up of Ryan Harris and Peter Sheck.
12. Divert Food Waste from the Landfill
Our town offers composting by providing bags that can be dropped off at a composting facility. We encouraged all sailors to put food waste into the composting bags and brought the bags to the composting facility.
17. Offer Vegetarian or Vegan Alternatives
We hosted a chili dinner which included a vegetarian white bean chili, salad, and corn bread.
