Best Practices Achieved
6. Publicize Your Sustainability Efforts
We announced and directed participants to the water bottle filler that is located at the club, including reusable signage. The on-site vendor used paper/compostable straws only, All silverware and cups were reusable - stainless cutlery, washable plates and glass recycled mason jars provided by Cairn Krafft of the SSA Thistle Fleet. The awards were handcrafted mugs from a local potter and are very practical. We announced our sustainability publicity in the Notice of Race, at the Skippers meeting, by flying the Sailors for the Sea burgee during the event, and reminding attendees regularly of the practices. Cairn Krafft provided reusable signage that was cleaned and returned post regatta and included directions to the water filling station, as well as refuse and recycle signage. Food was sourced by our snack bar vendor Botanas Fajardo - all homemade and exquisite, including vegetarian and vegan offerings - as always! Registration was 100% on line, so no paper was generated. Pre- and post regatta, the fleet members walked the entire premises, policing up any trash. We encouraged participants to conduct clean boating on the water by avoiding plastic bottles and ensuring no trash went in the water. We used only reusable paper bags for transport, and recycled all that were no longer serviceable.
