Best Practices Achieved
1. Eliminate Single-Use Water Bottles and Provide Water Refill Stations
there was no single use plastic anywhere at the venue
visitors were advised to brink their private bottles
water was served in glass bottles and private bottles were refilled at the venue food and drink station
2. Eliminate Plastic Straws
there was no plastic (or paper) straw
3. Serve Food with Plastic-Free Dinnerware
there was no single use plastic anywhere at the venue
food was served at the venue food and drink station in ceramic plates and metal cutlery were refilled
4. Skip Bags or Go Reusable
there was no plastic bag
5. Award Practical Items or Use a Perpetual or Upcycled Trophy
We have one perpetual trophy at the end of the year and we award medals to each event winners
The ribbons of the medals are made from recycled plastic and the medals themselves are metal (I don't have more info). They are manufactured in Greece in bulk, we have been using them since 2023 and we have medals for the next 3 years. This is cost effective, it gives consistency in the look/brand and saves local organizer from producing items. Local organizers are discouraged from creating trophies and encouraged to award local products as presents but this was not the case at this event.
6. Publicize Your Sustainability Efforts
We dedicated a whole day to our clean class recognition, with a dedicated video, reel on social media and international distribution
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=886K-KmmBFs&t=14s
7. Involve Local Organizations
We involved the Kitesurfing Association of Morocco, the Moroccan Sailing Federation, the ministry of tourism, the ministry of education and the municipality of the Dakhla region.
The Kitesurfing Association of Morocco supported with sport specific volunteers and with participants to the event. Most local sailors were not of a sporting level to compete but they were on the spot and benefited from the contact with the world's best sailors.
The ministry of tourism supported with personnel, with publicizing the event through their channels and they used media of the event to promote the region.
The ministry of education arranged for school children to visit the event.
Additionally, the royal court of Morocco took notice of the event and invited us to a site visit in another location in the country to consider hosting the Formula Kite (olympic class) worlds in 2026. If that happens, it will be the first time that a sailing Olympic Class World Championship is hosted in Africa.
8. Post Educational and Reusable Signage
This we didn't specifically do
9. Serve Local Food or Source Seafood Sustainably
Only local produce was available - and only local cuisine was available anyway
The only source of food was the camp's restaurant. This had a fixed menu every day. There were several options available but not massive, and everything was local.
Meat was mainly lamb, there was beef some days
There was fish from the Atlantic
Vegetables were local: tomato, cucumber, zucchini etc
Carbs were mainly couscous and arabic bread but there was also pasta
Many olives and herbs and the method of cooking for most food was tajine.
There were fresh and dried fruit - nuts and dates were the main desert.
There was hot and cold Moroccan mint tea for free.
Some beer and sodas were available and very expensive,
10. Organize a Green Team
There was no specific Green Team - the whole event team was the 'green team'
13. Use Paperless Event Management
Event platform is only online: https://www.racingrulesofsailing.org/documents/10441/event?name=WingFoil%2520Racing%2520World%2520Cup%2520Morocco
Communication is only online via the complementary information channel:

15. Prevent Toxins from Entering the Water
All used water is collected, treated and re-used for watering the plants and growing vegetables - which in turn are used in the kitchen
16. Increase Awareness of Wildlife and Habitat Protection
locals was very aware - we briefed and educated our sailors/visitors about the marine life in the lagoon, and specifically about the crab population that stays on the dry during low tide
