Best Practices Achieved
1. Eliminate Single-Use Water Bottles and Provide Water Refill Stations
The St. Thomas Yacht Club installed a water refill station in 2024, and this is used daily as well as at each of our regattas.
2. Eliminate Plastic Straws
We eliminated straws completely for beverage service at STIR 2025.
3. Serve Food with Plastic-Free Dinnerware
We offered table service for regatta meals, thus using silverware and not plastic utensils, plates, or to-go containers.
4. Skip Bags or Go Reusable
One of our prizes, in conjunction with sponsor The K3 Company, were reusable dry bags.
5. Award Practical Items or Use a Perpetual or Upcycled Trophy
Practical prizes as awards included reusable K3 waterproof dry bags.
9. Serve Local Food or Source Seafood Sustainably
The Galley served locally sourced Mahi Mahi for the STIR Regatta.
6. Publicize Your Sustainability Efforts
There is sustainability signage over top the Water Refill Station at STYC for STIR 2025.
7. Involve Local Organizations
Prior to STIR 2025, the St. Thomas Yacht Club worked with the Virgin Islands Conservation Society, the USVI Department of Planning and Natural Resources, and the Virgin Islands' Clean Coasts to obtain and install the water refill station.
11. Ensure Proper Waste Bin Placement and Signage
Three large trash bins were stratigically located around the Yacht Club area for STIR 2025, with staff assigned to empty regularly.
6. Publicize Your Sustainability Efforts
STIR 2025 was publicized in each event Press Release as a Clean Regatta.
13. Use Paperless Event Management
STIR 2025 utilized yachtscoring.com capabilities to notify sailors of courses and amendments online rather than posting on paper. Also, there were two electronic screens at STYC throughout the regatta that provided scores, event and dining information.
