Best Practices Achieved
1. Eliminate Single-Use Water Bottles and Provide Water Refill Stations
We provided a free water bottle refilling station.
2. Eliminate Plastic Straws
We gave out free reusable metal straws.
4. Skip Bags or Go Reusable
We talked and encouraged people to use reusable bags and distrubuted reusable grocery bags.
6. Publicize Your Sustainability Efforts
We set up a booth at the regatta and talked to some of the competitors and others about the Clean Regatta such as what it is and how they can help.
7. Involve Local Organizations
I reached out to Oceana and the event organizers to support me in coordinating and making the event possible.
8. Post Educational and Reusable Signage
We got some big reusable posters showcasing local wildlife and about the Clean Regatta.
11. Ensure Proper Waste Bin Placement and Signage
We placed a compost, recycling, and landfill bin in front of the booth with proper signage and taught people about using the correct bins.
12. Divert Food Waste from the Landfill
We had a compost bin in front of the booth to make sure that the food waste was going into the compost instead of the landfill.
16. Increase Awareness of Wildlife and Habitat Protection
Oceana donated some articles about local wildlife and their habitat and increased interest of many of the visitors of the booth.
20. Encourage Green Boating Practices
We passed out the non-motorized green boating guide and talked to people about how they can be more environmentally friendly during regattas and while they sail.
