Best Practices Achieved
1. Eliminate Single-Use Water Bottles and Provide Water Refill Stations
We use a water filtration system hooked up to a water spigot to provide water for participants to fill up their own water bottles.
2. Eliminate Plastic Straws
We do not offer straws.
3. Serve Food with Plastic-Free Dinnerware
We serve compostable utensils, plates, napkins & coffee cups.
4. Skip Bags or Go Reusable
We had string backpacks made with our regatta logo to give to each of the captains.
5. Award Practical Items or Use a Perpetual or Upcycled Trophy
This year we engraved flasks and shot glasses for our awards.
6. Publicize Your Sustainability Efforts
We publicized our sustainability efforts on our website, in our literature for sponsors and at our event.
7. Involve Local Organizations
We used a local composter that uses their compost on a local farm, and local caterers for food.
8. Post Educational and Reusable Signage
We have laminated signs that we reuse every year for our water station, recycle bins, compost bins and trash cans
11. Ensure Proper Waste Bin Placement and Signage
We have recycle bins, compost bins and trash bags placed strategically at the event with signs that make it obvious what can be recycled and what can be composted.
10. Organize a Green Team
We have a green team that organizes the composting and water station for this event and other events throughout the year.
12. Divert Food Waste from the Landfill
We compost with a local compost company called R.City that uses the compost on their farm.
13. Use Paperless Event Management
Our registration and sailing documents are all online.
17. Offer Vegetarian or Vegan Alternatives
We offer vegetarian options for all of our meals.
20. Inspire Future Action
We advertise our certification and our composting company to encourage our attendants to do their part to help the environment.
