Best Practices Achieved
1. Eliminate Single-Use Water Bottles and Provide Water Refill Stations
The majority of our participants use refillable water bottles on board, and we use only washable cups in our clubhouse and the after-party/awards.
2. Eliminate Plastic Straws
We never use any straws at all.
3. Serve Food with Plastic-Free Dinnerware
We use real washable silverware and most of our plates/bowls are compostable. All our serving utensils are washable.
4. Skip Bags or Go Reusable
We go reusable. We keep a stash of bags at our clubhouse for people to take home if needed.
5. Award Practical Items or Use a Perpetual or Upcycled Trophy
We set the standard in our sailing community for sustainable/functional awards every year. This time it is a brass letter opener presented in a reusable canvas bag tied up with a Christmas ornament. (There's candy in the bag, too).
6. Publicize Your Sustainability Efforts
Before the regatta we post this on all local sailing FB pages and send an email to participants.
7. Involve Local Organizations
While not directly involved in the regatta itself, many of our members belong to Clean Coast and clean up the coastal beaches and more. This photo is from our website.
8. Post Educational and Reusable Signage
These signs remain up in our clubhouse year round.
9. Serve Local Food or Source Seafood Sustainably
We only do potluck, so home cooked! Brats are from a local meat market; fish from local fish market; lots of salads! Even the beer kegs (to keep from using cans/glass) come from local breweries.
11. Ensure Proper Waste Bin Placement and Signage
These are always up in our clubhouse.
12. Divert Food Waste from the Landfill
Because it's a potluck all leftover food goes home with someone. We keep reusable containers on hand to let folks take home whatever they want. Nothing goes to waste.
13. Use Paperless Event Management
We use Regatta Network, email and FB for all information to be sent out to participants.
15. Prevent Toxins from Entering the Water
We have one boat owner with ePropulsion motor. Others are very keen to do their best to not pollute. We love our waterways.
16. Increase Awareness of Wildlife and Habitat Protection
This is ongoing in our whole sailing community. We love our wildlife here, especially our dolphins, herons, eagles and all.
17. Offer Vegetarian or Vegan Alternatives
We have a number of members who are vegan or vegetarian, so we have lots of veggies and salads, as well as local fish and vegan burgers.
18. Promote Alternative Transportation
Because participants come from several marinas we do promote carpooling.
19. Reduce Day-of Emissions
Again, we promote carpooling.
20. Inspire Future Action
No photo, but at every event we announce our connection to Sailors for the Sea and remind everyone that we use sustainable practices every day and encourage them to do the same. We expect it if they are in our clubhouse.
